About Crete <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where is Crete in Greece ?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crete is the largest and southernmost island in Greece, located between the Aegean and the Libyan Sea. It has a population of around 630,000. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just above Crete are the Cyclades islands and to the northeast, the Dodecanese islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are the main cities and regions of Crete ?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crete is divided into four administrative units called prefectures. Chania is in the west, followed by Rethymno, Heraklion and Lassithi. Chania, Heraklion and Rethymno are also the names of the capital cities in these prefectures. The capital of Lassithi (the easternmost prefecture) is Agios Nikolaos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Does Crete have an airport ?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crete has three airports. Chania and Heraklion have airports that serve international and domestic flights and there is a third, smaller airport in Sitia (Lassithi) just for domestic flights. The flight time to Athens is around 55mins and to Thessaloniki is approx. 1hr 30mins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do you get to Crete by ferry ?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are numerous ports along the northern coast of Crete with ferry connections to Piraeus and other Greek islands. There are daily ferries from Piraeus (the port of Athens) to Chania, Heraklion and Sitia. There are also ferry connections to many Cyclades and Dodecanese islands. There are more ferry connections in the summer months, including ferries from Rafina to Heraklion, in eastern Attica (around 45mins from the centre of Athens).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is Crete best known for ?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are so many things to do and see in Crete that one trip is never enough. There are landmark beaches (such as Balos, Elafonisi, Preveli and Vai) and some of the most important cultural sites in Europe (particularly the Minoan settlements the old towns of Chania, Heraklion and Rethymno). Crete is also known for its food (it is considered the home of the Mediterranean diet) and slow way of life, especially in the villages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When is the best time to visit Crete ?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Greece\u2019s most southern island, summer starts earlier in Crete than in other places in Greece. You can comfortably swim from mid-May till the end of October, but every season is special in Crete, with spring and autumn especially popular for outdoor activities. The temperatures can vary by 5-10 degrees from coastal to mountainous regions throughout the year. Crete does get busy in the peak summer months (July and August), so visiting in May-June and September are best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do you get around Crete ?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crete has an excellent road and bus network, particularly between the cities and main tourism settlements along the north coast. There are roads to all the main holiday spots around the south coast but be aware that Crete is mountainous so some of the roads in the interior can be windy and narrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Good to know<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Go for a meal in a tavern and wait for the treats at the end of the meal (don’t even dare to ask \u201chow much they cost\u201d..)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
    • Make sure you drink at least one glass of that frozen raki !! <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
      • It is the only place in Greece you can loudly say the word \u201cma..ka\u201dand let everyone think that you are cursing them, while it is a kind of Cretan cheese (a softer type of feta cheese) !<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        Mind the trip !<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Needs to be mentioned, that driving behavior on the island should be immediately reformed, so mind the drive !<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Go to any prefecture of Greece, tell them that you are coming from Chania and watch everyone going crazy, while they start booking the dates they will visit you !<\/p>\n\n\n\n
